Vocabulary (11-100)

Have you mastered 0 to 10? If you have, we can move on to the next step. Mastering 0 to 10 makes it easy to say subsequent numbers.

It is very simple to say 11-99 in Japanese.テキストが入ります。

10: 10+1→ じゅういち jyuu ichi
15: 10+5→ じゅうご jyuu go

Tens are called jyuu and we read the ones as they are.

It’s the same for numbers 20 onward.

20: 2+10→ にじゅう ni jyuu
23: 2+10+3→ にじゅうさん ni jyuu san

Pay attention when you come to 40 and 90. There are two ways of reading 4 and 9.

When we come to the tens, we only pronounce “yon jyuu” and not “shi jyuu” (strictly speaking, “shi jyuu” is also used but not in modern Japanese. Remember “yon jyuu” for daily usage). 90 is pronounced as “kyuu jyuu” and not “ku jyuu”.
