Question
I’m planning my first trip to Tokyo and I want to try a capsule hotel for one night to save money. I’ve seen photos but I’m nervous about check-in and the rules inside. What is a capsule hotel and how do I use one?

カプセルホテル(かぷせるほてる)
Kapuseru hoteru
Capsule hotel
You slip off your shoes at the entrance, drop them into a numbered locker, and reception hands you a wristband key — that’s your first three minutes at a kapuseru hoteru. It’s a budget hotel where you sleep in a small private pod about the size of a single bed, stacked in rows along a shared corridor. Floors are usually sex-separated.
Your bag and clothes go into a separate locker, taller than the shoe one. The capsule itself just has a curtain or shutter, not a lock — showers and toilets are shared down the hall.
Inside, keep your voice low and your phone on silent. The walls between pods are paper-thin, and many guests are sleeping off late shifts.
