Question
I’m planning a business meeting in Tokyo and I would like to request a recommendation for a good restaurant to take my Japanese colleagues. How can I ask “Can you recommend a good restaurant around here?” in Japanese?

Kono atari de osusume no resutoran wa arimasuka?
Can you recommend a good restaurant around here?

This phrase is helpful when seeking local recommendations, especially if you want to make a good impression on your colleagues by choosing an excellent dining spot. “Kono atari” means “around here”, “osusume” means “recommendation”, and “resutoran” is the Japanese way to say “restaurant”. By using “wa arimasuka” (do you have), you are politely asking for any recommendations.

Do note that you can replace “resutoran” with any other establishment type, like “kafe” (café) if you’re looking for something else.
