Question
I’m visiting Tokyo for the first time and planning to meet some friends at a local izakaya (Japanese pub) in Shibuya. How do I ask the staff, “Do you have an English menu?” in Japanese?

英語(えいご)のメニューはありますか。
Eego no menyuu wa arimasu ka?
Do you have an English menu?

When visiting restaurants in Japan, you may sometimes need to request an English menu. This phrase will help you do just that. Eego no means “English”; menyuu refers to “menu”; and arimasu ka is a polite way of asking, “Do you have?”

If you substitute “eego no” with another language, you can ask for menus in that language, for example “furansugo no menyuu wa arimasu ka?” for a French menu. This question could prove quite useful during your dining experiences in Japan.
