Question
I’ve been getting into manga and anime, and I keep seeing fan discussions describe certain characters as having “sanpaku eyes.” It usually pops up around villains or intense-looking heroes. I tried to figure it out from the romaji but I can’t quite place what makes an eye sanpaku. What does sanpaku eyes mean?

三白眼(さんぱくがん)
Sanpakugan
Three-white eyes

The word literally means “three whites”: san is “three”, paku comes from 白 haku “white” (softened to paku after the n in san), and gan means “eye”. So sanpakugan describes an eye where the white part shows on three sides of the iris instead of the usual two, because the iris sits unusually high or low. That’s the look you’ve been spotting in those panels.

In old Japanese folklore around face reading, this trait has traditionally been seen as a sign of bad luck or an unsettled mind, which is why calling a real person sanpakugan to their face can come across as rude. In manga and anime, artists use it on purpose to make a character look intense, dangerous, or just a little off. Among fans, sanpaku has become a neutral way to describe that drawn look.
