Question
I had to return to my home country to take care of some personal matters and I miss my Japanese girlfriend very much. Even though it has only been a few days I feel that it has already been a few years.
How do I tell her that I miss her very much in Japanese?

Answer by Professional Japanese Teacher
Perhaps there is no one phrase in Japanese that directly translates into “I miss you” because Japanese people usually do not express their emotions so directly.
However, you can use the following to show your feelings. As you can see, these phrases do not say “I miss you” directly but they show the longing for the other person equally effectively.

(1) 会(あ)いたい
Aitai
I want to meet you.

(2) さびしい
Sabishii
I’m lonely (without you)

I hope you will see your girlfriend soon.
