Question
I’m going to Japan next week for my long-awaited holiday! I want to try communicating in Japanese as much as I can this time. How do I say “I want to check in” in Japanese at the front desk?

チェックインをお願(ねが)いします
Chekkuin o onegaishimasu
I would like to check in, please.

When you want to check in at a hotel, you can say Chekkuin o onegaishimasu. Chekkuin is simply “check in”, pronounced slowly in Japanese. You can also drop the “o” and just say Chekkuin onegaishimasu.

Onegaishimasu is a very useful phrase, meaning “please”. You can use it to request something or ask for help, simply by adding whatever you’re asking for in front of onegaishimasu. For example, if you want to check out, you can simply say Chekku auto onegaishimasu (I would like to check out, please).

Enjoy your trip!
