Question
I feel lonely as I must stay home all the time during this period of self-restraint caused by COVID-19. I have been sending messages to many people.
I want to send a message “How is it going?” to a Japanese girl whom I used to go out with. How shall I say it in Japanese?

Answer by Professional Japanese Teacher
調子(ちょうし)はどう。
Chooshi wa doo?
How is it going?
It is certainly lonely when you cannot meet people, especially when you are staying alone. SNS is a great tool to use in this case.
You can say “Chooshi wa doo?” for close friends, or use a slightly polite version “調子(ちょうし)はどうですか Chooshi wa doo desuka?” I hope that we will return to our normal days as soon as possible.
